LOGAN SQUARE — A new service that offers to take drunken customers — and their cars — home after a night of revelry hopes to reduce dangerous conditions on the road around the holiday season.
Mobile app BeMyDD first launched in Cleveland in 2010, and promises a staff of "professional, experienced drivers...wear[ing] formal business attire."
The Chicago rollout was announced earlier this week.
The pickup service is for drunken clients who have driven to a location, but do not want to drive home. BeMyDD will dispatch two professional drivers to take you and your car home for $25 plus mileage fees.
If you just want to be fancy for a night, you can get a personal driver to take you to and from your destination for $14 to $19.50 per hour (with a two-hour-minimum)
The service is an alternative to something like Uber or Lyft, BeMyDD said in a release.
"Between unpredictable prices and unprofessional drivers, the working professional and luxury set would rather rent a professional driver to drive their own cars for an important night on the town," they said.
Ten people are pulled over for drunken driving in Chicago each night, according to the company, and drunken driving statistics are significantly higher during the holidays — 40 percent of traffic-related deaths during Christmas and New Year’s involve drunken drivers.
A total of 3,795 people were arrested for driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol in Chicago in 2013, and these numbers are expected to be similar for 2014, according to BeMyDD.
“BeMyDD provides a socially responsible service year round, but with the spike in alcohol-related car accidents and fatalities during the holiday period, we wanted to do something special to help make the roads safer over the next few weeks,” said Arthur Simanovsky, president and CEO of BeMyDD.
